How We Got the Name...
The following is an extract from a 1994 report on Norwich House by Edwin J Rose:
‘The Northwest corner of the building has a Dragon Beam, with hoists diverging from it in the usual way. Its inner end is set halfway across the building; to the East the ceiling joists run North-South, to the South they run East-West, but they all appear to be original.
The presence of the Dragon Beams on two levels is remarkable, for they must surely indicate that this was once a jettied building; there is however no other visible trace of a timber frame now visible. However the strange arrangement of builds in the North wall can also be explained by the presence of a jetty. The full height brick area at the corner would indicate where the jetty was underbuilt and infilled. The area of ground floor flint walling is original, and the brickwork above represents where the timber frame has been removed and the jetty covered. The fact that the brick walling continues a short way East of the fossil quoins in the flintwork below may very well indicate that the jetty projected to the East as well.
Dr S Cotton has researched the building of the (Worstead) church and states that the chancel was rebuilt in 1434 – 1485. Apart from this evidence, an early 16th century date would fit what is visible of the original main block, and this is an interesting confirmation – the material from the old chancel being taken across the road to be built into the new house.’
